The Pug, like other short-faced dogs with curled tails, originated in China. He travelled to England via Holland in the mid 19th century, imported by traders from the Dutch East India Company. He has enjoyed royal patronage throughout the centuries in both Britain and continental Europe. A decidedly square and cobby dog with large, round, short face, large eyes, and a tail carried in a tight twist over his back. His fine, short, smooth coat requires occasional gentle brushing and his wrinkles and eyes should be regularly checked and cleaned. A unique character, highly intelligent and adaptable to most domestic situations. He is intelligent, faithful and affectionate. Excellent with children, tolerant and good tempered, he does well as a pet in town or country. He gets by with minimal exercise, but watch his diet as he tends to gain weight easily. Colour: solid black or silver, apricot or fawn black mask and ears.
