First registered here in 1968, the Malamute is classified in the Working Group. Originally bred by the Eskimos of northwest Alaska and known as the carthorse of the Arctic, the Malamute is a heavily boned, powerfully built sledge dog with a thick coat, curved tail and pricked ears. Double coated with a thick, coarse topcoat and dense oily undercoat, the Malamute needs regular grooming, especially when moulting. He has adapted well to warmer climates but is definitely the outdoor type who needs lots of exercise and prefers the winter months. Selfconfident, affectionate and friendly, they rarely bark and are unsuitable for guard work. He is patient with children but, like all large dogs, should be supervised during play. Malamutes require strict and careful handling as they are large, powerful, often very obstinate and tend to be aggressive with other dogs. Colour ranges from light grey to black, or gold through the shades of red to liver–- always with white markings, including a ‘mask’ on his face.
