The largest breed in the Terrier Group, Airedales were exhibited at dog shows in Cape Town as early as 1889. Known as the king of terriers, the Airedale is a native of Yorkshire, originally bred to combat rats and for otter hunting. A typical terrier, with keen expressions and alert carriage of tail and ears, he is an active, muscular, cobby dog with a playful dignity. A hardy breed which requires no special care apart from the job of keeping his hard, wiry coat in order with fairly regular grooming. He must be either ‘hand-stripped’ or clipped to maintain the smart terrier look. Affectionate, intelligent and spirited, the breed excels as a loyal companion, house guard and children’s pet. Airedales are adaptable and trainable, and while they do not look for a fight, they can handle the fiercest aggressor if forced to. Colour: black and tan or grizzle and tan.
